Here are five Spring break ideas designed around local and international school calendars for families seeking meaningful, luxurious journeys.

Okinawa, Japan – Island soul, Japanese finesse.

Okinawa offers a gentler, sunnier side of Japan — subtropical beaches, coral reefs, and a slower rhythm that feels worlds away from Tokyo. March brings pleasant spring weather, typically 18°C to 23°C, ideal for outdoor exploration without the summer crowds. You can expect clear skies, calm seas and fresh island produce.

This destination suits families with children aged 5 and up, and multigenerational travellers who enjoy relaxed luxury with cultural depth. Days are easily filled with beach time, marine activities, Ryukyu history, and low-key nature walks, making it especially appealing for families who want a different side of Japan without the intensity. We recommend spending 5 to 7 days, allowing time to slow down and settle into island life.

Both Rosewood Miyakojima and The Ritz-Carlton Okinawa are currently offering every third night complimentary if you book three consecutive nights or more. Halekulani Okinawa has a Stay 4 Pay 3 promotion. For those seeking a luxurious stay even further off the beaten path, HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island is a resort built on an island with only 350 inhabitants.

Sri Lanka – A small island with a big story.

Sri Lanka packs extraordinary diversity into a compact island — ancient cities, tea-covered hills, wildlife-rich national parks, and golden beaches. March sits comfortably between monsoon seasons on the west and south coasts, with warm temperatures around 26°C to 30°C. This journey suits adventurous families with children aged 7+, ideal for those who enjoy variety — safaris, scenic train rides, and meaningful encounters without constant packing and unpacking (definitely a plus for families). We recommend spending 8 to 12 days, to immerse yourselves in culture and nature, from coast to hill country.

Some of our favourite stays include The Wallawwa for at least a day to decompress from the flights which usually arrive really late at night into Colombo, Cape Weligama and Amanwella along the southern coast, Uga Chena Huts to access Yala National Park for exhilarating safari excursions and Goatfell for a few nights of quiet in hill country with lots of space for kids to run around.

South Africa – Wild encounters, refined comforts.

Looking to venture further? March is an excellent time to visit South Africa. Summer softens into autumn, with warm days (18°C to 28°C), fewer crowds, and excellent wildlife viewing. From Big Five safaris to Cape Town’s food and wine scene, the country delivers depth and drama in equal measure for travellers young and old. This trip is best suited for families with pre-teens and up, although some lodges allow younger children in private game drive vehicles. For an unhurried trip which combines a safari lodge, the Garden Route and Cape Town, we recommend 10 to 14 days. For families bound by the Singaporean public school calendar, consider this destination for the June or December school holidays! Singapore Airlines has direct flights to Johannesburg, as well as a return flight from Cape Town to Singapore via Johannesburg.

We love MalaMala Game Reserve and Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge (the latter has an amazing kids' club), Babylonstoren in the Winelands which has a working farm for kids to pick their own ingredients, the newly reopened and renovated InterContinental Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town for easy access to the vibrant V&A Waterfront, and the iconic Mount Nelson Hotel where we can pamper you with our Bellini Club by Belmond booking perks.

Tasmania, Australia – Big nature, quiet luxury

Tasmania in March is synonymous with quiet luxury — crisp air, golden light, and fewer visitors as summer fades. While you can expect temperatures to dip to around 12°C to 15°C on cloudy days, the weather is perfect for hiking, wildlife spotting, and indulgent farm-to-table dining. The island’s raw beauty is balanced by thoughtful, design-led lodges, as well as many options for self-catered accommodation. This trip is ideal for families who enjoy self-drive holidays with children aged 8+, seeking fresh air and open space. You would need at least 7 days to cover the eastern half of the island, from Launceston in the north to Hobart in the south. My most memorable experience was truffle hunting with my wife, an activity I would highly recommend to families! Other cool activities include learning about the conservation of native wildlife and getting to meet Tasmanian devils, and cruising to Bruny Island and enjoying fresh seafood caught right off the boat.

We love the 2 and 3-bedroom houses at Piermont Retreat, Freycinet Lodge and the very luxurious Saffire Freycinet for day trips along the beautiful eastern coast, and The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel as a launchpad to explore Hobart. As guests of a Marriott STARS & LUMINOUS preferred agency, you can enjoy complimentary room upgrade, USD100 hotel credit and other perks when you book The Tasman with us.

For families looking for a truly off the beaten path trip, the 4D3N Wukalina Walk takes you through protected indigenous land in the northeastern corner of Tasmania, where you will be hosted by a member of the Palawa community and learn about their connection to country while being immersed fully in nature. This trip includes staying at the a private camp near the coast. Get in touch with Xin to find out more about her experience.

Belmond Eastern & Oriental Express from Singapore – The journey is the destination

For something closer to home but truly different, hop on a Belmond luxury train journey departing from Singapore. Travelling through Malaysia in art-deco carriages, this 4D3N experience blends slow travel with impeccable service, fine dining, and ever-changing scenery. March offers warm tropical weather and a relaxed pace that suits rail travel perfectly. We recommend this for multigenerational families where grandparents can spend quality time with teenage or adult grandchildren. Bellini Club by Belmond booking perks apply.
